Terrel Wallace, better known as Tall Black Guy, has been doing it real big this year. Back in April, he put out the outstanding instrumental sizzler, ‘Solar Coaster for the People’, as part of a compilation for First Word Records. He’s been spreading soul power with his sublime DJ sets in London, and his first at Glastonbury. And his latest production, ‘Superstar’, with wife and husband duo, Malice & Mario Sweet, is a rarefied, old-school stonker of a track.
There’s a squeeze of continental jazz to ‘Superstar’, its intro especially brings to mind songs from the chanteuses of the Mediterranean. Its opening serenade is only a brief mood-settler. What follows is series of peppery funk loops that emphasize the initial continental feel. Toss in some horns, jazzy piano keys and dynamic vocal delivery from Shelby Poole and Malice Sweet, which sounds like they’re channelling at least three stems of R&B (Aaliyah, Cleopatra and Amerie), and you’ve got yourself a flavoursome song. Tall Black Guy has one the keenest noises around for rare grooves. Listening to his music is as educational as it is entertaining.
